Insurance: its meaning
It also doesn’t help that the majority of people consider themselves to be invincible i.e. they would not be affected by any disaster, natural or man-made. But the probability of getting involved in a calamity or mishap is quite high. Car accidents, fires, earthquakes, terrorist attacks, the list is endless. Ignoring the need for insurance would be a folly in today’s world. The answer is a definite yes whenever there’s a question of the necessity of insurance.
Insurance can be described as the compensation paid by insurance companies to people who have suffered loss from a particular event (mostly financial loss). The suffering party would have been paying premiums or prepayments to the insurance company for such a possibility. In other words, insurance is a form of protection that minimizes the effect of any unfortunate incident. ‘Insurer’ is the company that sells the insurance. ‘Insurance rate’ is a factor used to determine the amount, called the ‘premium’, to be charged for a certain amount of insurance coverage. The future cannot be predicted which makes it all the more important to be insured against unexpected mishaps and be prepared for it. It is very difficult trying to guess the amount of insurance that would be needed by you. Choosing the right policy is very important. There are some fundamental questions that need to be assessed by you before signing on for any insurance policy. One is what would you get after the particular event for which you are taking the policy. Secondly, do you have any dependents? What is the condition of your health and would it be possible for you to support yourself if you become disabled or chronically ill? The common answer would be no which means that you need to get yourself insured. There are various types of insurance available today and you can pick one that suits your needs.
- Car insurance: Auto insurance or car insurance is one of the common forms of insurance. Generally, everyone has an idea about motor insurance. This is because any vehicle driven on public roads must have a certain level of insurance.
- Life insurance: It can be seen as a way of saving cash through endowment policies or can be seen as a way of providing for your dependents incase you die early.
- Health insurance: Health insurance can be of two types. One is ‘Private medical insurance’. Medical Insurance covers the costs of private medical treatment for illnesses that are curable and short-term. Incase you become ill, this insurance will help you in getting treated immediately privately rather than being put on a government waiting list. This is especially important in the case of American insurance. The second type of health insurance is ‘Critical illness insurance’. This insurance insures your income if you become too ill to work later on in life and consequently, protects any dependents or loved ones from unexpected financial difficulty.
- House insurance or Home insurance: It is broadly divided into two categories. Contents or property insurance covers the contents of a home such as furniture, carpets, clothes, television, refrigerators, jewelry and so on. In other words, all the contents that would be taken by you if you move anywhere. Building insurance protects against damage to the actual structure of the home and to its fixtures and fittings. Both the above insurance policies can be bought separately or together in one package.
- Travel insurance: Such insurance covers the unexpected incidents that occur while traveling abroad. If someone falls ill it is much more difficult than it would be at home to cope with the situation.
